Is your child reversing numbers and letters? Don't panic!!!

I remember when my four year old would try to convince me that "b" looks the same as a "d" and 6 looks exactly like a 9. My first thought was "Is this something I should be concerned about?"
In searching for the answer I found that my child's brain did not have a complete concept of left and right at his young age. Actually, it is very common for children to reverse their numbers and letters especially between the ages of 3 - 6.
So..., there was nothing to stress about because children do grow up to know the difference. All my three children reversed numbers for a short period of time. That's when I found tools or developed my own to help them learn it for themselves.
These 3-6 year olds in this video were organizing numbers zero through nine. When it came to numbers six and nine the debate started about which one is which. The one child knew which one was six because she has counted the dots on the opposite side of the square and has already repeated the action a few times.
It seems to me that it is much better for a child to correct herself, and therefore the lesson becomes part of the child's experience and easily internalized. Adult's role is to assist with little correction and with an attitude of acceptance because truly the bottom line is to create a lasting and loving relationships with our children.
When there's a problem to be solved I descend into the basement late at night and create. This single diget Number Box is a result of creating something that would work for all children.
An easy way to teach preschool children to count is with hands-on materials.
