How to motivate your childOne of the challenges we as adults face is how to motivate our children so that they can apply their talents and make this world a better place. Here are my top three views. 1. The idea that work is play is a strange idea at first. But, parents need to see that small children love to take care of themselves and others. It’s in all of us. Once we separate the two ideas that somehow work is not fun, only play is fun, we create a dichotomy of two opposing worlds. The joy is snuffed out and we become robotic. I strongly believe that it’s not like that at all. People love to work if they choose the work that has been destined for them, whatever that may be, as long it is not destructive. Also, think of practical life as an essential tool for our well being. It should be on an automatic survival mode. Teach the same to your children. 2. Large tasks can be broken up in very small tasks. I write each task on a slip of paper and pin it on a board with their name on it. When they accomplish that task, they exchange it for a coin. By the end of the week they have saved some money and can used it to buy food or some useful tools. 3. Toys are really tools to help children grow. Choose toys that have a positive purpose and give your child joy. There’s nothing more disturbing than to see a child with tons of toys who says he’s bored. |
